根据弹性体是否可塑化可以分为热固性弹性体，热塑性弹性体二大类。热固性弹性体，这也就是传统意义的橡胶（Rubber），热塑性弹性体（Thermoplastic elastomer），缩写为TPE，为上世纪90年代开始逐渐被越来越多的商业化应用。这个分类同样也说明了这二类弹性体加工所采用的是二种不同的方式：橡胶用热固性设备加工，TPE采用热塑性设备加工。

弹性体按照原料组成分类如下：

1. 传统橡胶（Rubber）：

1.1 不饱和橡胶

天然橡胶 Natural rubber (NR)

异戊橡胶 Synthetic polyisoprene (IR)

聚丁二烯橡胶 Polybutadiene (BR)

丁苯橡胶 Styrene-butadiene Rubber (copolymer of polystyrene and polybutadiene, SBR)

丁睛橡胶Nitrile rubber (copolymer of polybutadiene and acrylonitrile, NBR)

氯丁橡胶Chloroprene rubber (CR)

1.2 饱和橡胶

丁基橡胶 Isobutylene Isoprene Rubber (IIR) 或 Butyl Rubber

卤化丁基橡胶 Halogenated butyl rubbers (氯化丁基橡胶chloro isobutylene isoprene rubber: CIIR; 溴化丁基橡胶bromo isobutylene isoprene rubber: BIIR)

二元乙丙橡胶和三元乙丙橡胶 EPM (ethylene propylene rubber, a copolymer of ethylene and propylene) and EPDM rubber (ethylene propylene diene rubber, a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and a diene-component)

氯醚橡胶 Epichlorohydrin rubber (ECO)

聚丙烯酸酯橡胶 Polyacrylic rubber (ACM, ABR)

硅橡胶 Silicone rubber (SI, Q, MVQ)
